Emergency Loans
These are short term, immediate loans (up to $100) for food, transport, medication, bills and other small sundry debts. Emergency loans are interest free but must be re-paid within one month. Students need to complete an application form and be interviewed by an Education and Welfare Officer.
Student /University Loans
The University Student Loans Fund provides larger interest-free loans for student needs including books, equipment, study travel, accommodation set-up, short-term budget problems, essential transport etc. The fund will not lend for the payment of tuition fees, HECS or outstanding debts to the University
Students applying for a loan must be interviewed by an Education and Welfare Officer and may be required to provide further documentation; this will be assessed at interview.
Loans over $500 require a guarantor; that is, someone who can stand as security for the loan. This will be arranged during interview. The maximum loan possible is $2,000. All loans are subject to assessment and approval under the University Loans Policy.
Borrowers sign a contract to re-pay the loan over an agreed period, usually a year and not later than graduation. The loans are INTEREST-FREE but a penalty may be applied for un-negotiated late repayments. Students who default on their agreed repayments will also have a Negative Service Indicator placed against them which will prevent from re-enrolment, graduation and access to results or trancripts until the situation is corrected.
Eligibility Criteria for both schemes:
- Must be an AWARD student of the University of Adelaide.
- Must be currently enrolled.
- Must demonstrate capacity to re-pay.
- Quotes on equipment may be required.
