Hello,

My name is Liam Johns and I am running with Grassroots to be your 2022 Rural Officer!

Having spent 2 years studying from Strathalbyn, I am familiar with how inaccessible our university is for regional students.

Most of us spend hours travelling to and from university multiple days per week (often whilst holding down part-time work), leaving us too exhausted to properly engage with our studies. It is usually impossible for regional students to avoid this travel time, as many online tutorials are not structured in ways conducive to learning (e.g. online discussion boards) or in some cases are only available to students stuck overseas or interstate.

As your 2022 Rural Officer, I will improve educational accessibility by fighting for the university to:

- Introduce a regional access plan, under which students frequently travelling to campus from regional South Australia can apply for reasonable adjustments to be made to their studies;

- Make online tutorials more widely available and, where possible, be structured in ways that closely emulate face-to-face teaching; 

- Increase the number of scholarships for working class rural and regional students so as to reduce the burdens we face.
