Enjoys meeting a wide range of people from all over the world, comfortable working in a small team (2-3 volunteers per shift), and welcoming a wide variety of visitors to the Cathedral.

St Peter’s Cathedral is an iconic building at the heart of Adelaide, residing on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people. It is a sacred space of prayer and meditation; an historic building of great beauty; a place for those of faith, and those of none. St Peter’s attracts approximately 40,000 visitors each year.

The Cathedral community values diversity and intellectual freedom, it includes people who travel from all over Adelaide to share in Cathedral life. We are all ages, from babies to octogenarians, and from many different backgrounds.

2019 is the 150th anniversary year of the Cathedral, and it’s shaping up to be a very special “Festival 150” year. We would absolutely love to have more volunteers to welcome the many visitors to the Cathedral.

Welcoming is a great way to gain new skills, learn new things, and to meet people from all over the world. (And you also might be lucky enough to meet the Cathedral Cat!)

The role of the Cathedral Welcomers includes:

  • Opening and closing of the Cathedral
  • Greeting visitors and providing some introductory information
  • Offering printed information, in English and many other languages
  • Ensuring the safety and security of people and the fabric of the Cathedral
  • Being familiar with safety and emergency procedures
  • Working as part of a team with other Cathedral volunteers and staff
  • Encouraging visitors to visit the Cathedral shop and participate in scheduled guided tours
  • Being available to answer questions (but Welcomers are not expected to be Tour Guides)
  • Directing visitors with particular needs to appropriate resources
  • Recording visitor numbers

If you are interested in this fantastic opportunity, please contact the Cathedral Office on 08 8267 4551, or email Rachel at for more information and an initial conversation.

We look forward to having you join our enthusiastic team of Welcomers, not all of whom are church goers.
